Professional Conduct in the Nanny Industry

The Nanny Code of Conduct and Professionalism focuses on accountability, responsibility and building trust within the US Nanny Association community.

Code of Conduct and Professionalism

A guide for the childcare industry, the Code of Conduct and Professionalism applies to all US Nanny Association members. We expect professional and ethical behavior by all individuals and businesses/organizations who chose to be members. In addition to a Code of Conduct, we also share our Association’s objectives and values.

Members and Certification Recipients

Applicable to US Nanny Association members and credential recipients, the US Nanny Association has a formal process to investigate ethics and conduct complaints. A violation of the code of conduct by a member or certified individual of the US Nanny Association may lead to disciplinary actions such as censure, removal of certification or expulsion from the organization.

The US Nanny Association welcomes and is committed to uplifting everyone in our nanny community. We invite parents, nannies, au pairs, doulas, childcare providers, agency owners, daycare managers and other childcare businesses to join.

A code of conduct helps parents and nannies have a deeper understanding of our industry standards. It also allows the US Nanny Association to promote positive goodwill among our members, potential members and others in the childcare industry.

Code of Conduct and Professionalism

Collaborating with experts and industry leaders, the US Nanny Association brings people together to respectfully discuss challenging topics. We also share educational seminars in both English and Spanish. In all engagements, our code of conduct and professionalism supports a respectful environment for everyone. If you would like to be a part of this community, we welcome you. Members and certification recipients will:

Value the work and dignity of every person, pursue the truth and engage with ethical and equal treatment of others. Members and certification recipients will not make malicious or intentionally false statements.


Engage in meaningful conversations and respect the contributions of other individuals and organizations. Members and certification recipients will respect each other, even those with differing ideas and views.


Share information to support employment and the physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of children. Information shared will be evidence-based and supported by leading organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics and other expert organizations.


Welcome everyone and do not limit or impede participation in programs or events based on gender, race, sex, age, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion, political beliefs, marital status, medical condition and/or social or family background.


Faithfully adhere to confidentiality agreements and respect propriety, copyrighted and trademarked materials. We uphold the privacy of children, employers, co-worker’s, peers, educators, business leaders and other members of the community.


Maintain honesty in all professional dealings. Members and certification recipients will not submit fraudulent information on documents or misrepresent their professional qualifications. Members and certification recipients will make commitments and promises in good faith and will not engage in or condone dishonest behavior.


Follow federal and state laws and regulations. Members and certification recipients will follow all government and industry guidelines to create a professional work environment and maintain a safe environment for children at all times.


Conduct themselves professionally which includes but is not limited to being honest and open when communicating with each other and following through on commitments.


Members and certification recipients shall directly approach those persons with whom they have a conflict or disagreement and privately and/or legally resolve disputes in a fair and professional manner.

Code of Conduct Management

Differences of opinion, contractual disputes or other conflicts should be handled in a respectful and professionally courteous manner. If you have an issue with a member that cannot be resolved through a discussion with them, it is recommended that you consider seeking an appropriate remedy which may include conflict resolution programs or legal recourse. The US Nanny Association does not and cannot provide legal advice about conflict resolution programs or legal recourse or remedies.

Members of the US Nanny Association agree to the Code of Conduct and Professionalism. Members and credential recipients of the US Nanny Association may be censured or expelled for cause. Sufficient cause for such censure or expulsion from membership and/or revocation of a certification shall be a violation of the Code of Conduct and Professionalism or other conduct prejudicial to the interests of the US Nanny Association. Anyone found to be guilty of participating in any illegal activities will be removed from the US Nanny Association membership and any credentials will be revoked.

Code of Conduct Process

The US Nanny Association shall have such authority and power as it may be necessary to adopt rules and policies relative to the procedures and Code of Conduct and Professionalism for US Nanny Association programs and membership. Censure or expulsion shall be by the affirmation action of the Executive Director and/or General Counsel. If expelled, members must remove all affiliation with the US Nanny Association including its certification programs within 10 business days after the membership is formally revoked. No portion of the membership or credential fees will be refunded.

Anyone who has reason to believe and evidence substantiated by facts to prove that a member or credential recipient is conducting themselves in a manner contrary to the Code of Conduct and Professionalism may register a complaint. Reasons to submit a complaint include:

  • Failing to uphold the Code of Conduct and Professionalism
  • Abuse of financial responsibility and reporting
  • Defaming the US Nanny Association
  • Distributing content that infringes on confidentiality, copyrights and trademarks
  • Other serious breaches of professional conduct

The US Nanny Association complaint management process includes an inquiry and documentation. The US Nanny Association maintains confidential files of all correspondence relating to the complaint. Only the parties involved, the General Counsel and the Executive Director are privy to the information.

The US Nanny Association will pursue disciplinary action against individuals who retaliate against a person raising a conduct concern. Conduct concerns and complaints can be submitted to
